Ecclesiastes figured this out first

I just discovered that Ecclesiastes 9:11 refers to this very concept of hidden evidence.  I guess they lived in the same world we do today:

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men […] ... Continue reading »
